Support .NET Core with the Synergy .NET Assembly API

Delivered

The .NET Assembly API is a great tool for loading, interacting with and executing .NET code within the Synergy Runtime. With the explosive growth of .NET Core and recent announcements that .NET Core will continue to get new features and functionality that will not exist in the .NET CLR, it would be a very useful if the Synergy .NET Assembly API supported .NET Core assemblies within the Synergy Runtime.

This is definitely something that we will be doing as part of a much larger project. In November of 2020 .NET Core becomes .NET 5.0, but that version is not an LTS (long term support) release. We think that .NET 5.0 will be considered by many to be an early adopters release, and that most people will wait for the first LTS release, which will be .NET 6.0 and is scheduled for delivery in November 2021.

Over and above the .NET Assembly API, there are lots of other places throughout Synergy where .NET is involved, and each of these areas will require attention to work in the new .NET environment. We are in the process of planning for all of these changes, and our current goal is to target the .NET 6.0 LTS release in Q4 2021.

We're working on creating an updated product roadmap, which will contain much more detail.
