What are your best work from home tips?
As many of us are now working from our homes rather than our offices, I thought it might be helpful to start sharing some tips for keeping up productivity and sanity. :) Please share some of yours in the comments.
Setting up a space with minimal distractions is an important one for me. I'm able to sit at a desk, but if that isn't possible I'd recommend a dining room table over a couch.
When I was working in SLC the big things were:
- Have a space dedicated to work (its helpful if you have a completely different setup for a work PC). That is free of distractions (I had a dedicated office in the second bedroom of my apartment).
- Maintain the same hours you did when you were in the office. If you started at 7am and left at 4pm continue to do so.
- Dress as if you were in the office and maintain the same high level of personal grooming standards.
- Commit to video conference in your daily standups and when possible during all calls.
- Invest in a headset (I used this cheap Logitech Headset - H390; sold out on Amazon right now), specifically with an inline mute button. You want to mute that unless you're talking in the chat.
- Document everything you do.
The other thing I find I am rubbish at is being disciplined to actually stop. It is very tempting to "Just finish this off" or "stop when I get this working" or "I'll just answer thee emails... and then the replies to them..."
