What are your best work from home tips?

As many of us are now working from our homes rather than our offices, I thought it might be helpful to start sharing some tips for keeping up productivity and sanity. :) Please share some of yours in the comments.

Setting up a space with minimal distractions is an important one for me. I'm able to sit at a desk, but if that isn't possible I'd recommend a dining room table over a couch.

When I was working in SLC the big things were:

  1. Have a space dedicated to work (its helpful if you have a completely different setup for a work PC). That is free of distractions (I had a dedicated office in the second bedroom of my apartment).
  2. Maintain the same hours you did when you were in the office. If you started at 7am and left at 4pm continue to do so.
  3. Dress as if you were in the office and maintain the same high level of personal grooming standards.
  4. Commit to video conference in your daily standups and when possible during all calls.
  5. Invest in a headset (I used this cheap Logitech Headset - H390; sold out on Amazon right now), specifically with an inline mute button. You want to mute that unless you're talking in the chat.
  6. Document everything you do.
Its not hard if you are disciplined, make sure that family and friends know that you are "on the job" and not "on staycation".

Exactly right, apart from point 3.  In my case it is "dress as if you came in from mucking out 6 horses and going right back out to do teh same again when ever you finish".

The other thing I find I am rubbish at is being disciplined to actually stop.   It is very tempting to "Just finish this off" or "stop when I get this working" or "I'll just answer thee emails... and then the replies to them..."

before you know it its 11.00pm
